Chapter 1 — Japji Sahib
Japji Sahib
42 Shloka • Translation Only
ॐ - The correct pronunciation of this word is 'Ek Omkar'. It is pronounced as three parts. The meanings of these three are also different. Ek - One (non-dual). Ek Au - The same. Omkar (~) Nirankar (Formless One); i.e., Brahma, Creator, Ishwar, Parmatma, Bhagwan, Vahiguru. Ek Au - Nirankar is the only one. Sat Namu - His name is truth. Karta - He is the creator of the universe and its creatures. Purkhu - He is perfect (powerful) in doing all this. Nirbhau - There is no fear of any kind in him. i.e., Like other gods, demons and worldly creatures, he does not have hatred or fear of birth and death; he is beyond all these. Nirvairu - He is devoid of enmity (hatred/enmity). Akaal - He is beyond time (death); i.e., He is immortal. Moorti - Being immortal, he always exists. Ajooni - He does not take any form because he is free from the cycle of birth and death. Saibham - He is self-illuminated. Guru - One who brings light (knowledge) in the darkness (ignorance). Prasadi - A gift of grace. That is - all this can be achieved by the grace of the Guru.
Chant. (This is also considered a title of Guru's words.)
Nirankar (Akaal Purush) was also true before the creation of the universe; he was the truth (form) at the beginning of the ages. Now only he exists in the present as well, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji has said that in the future also the same true form Nirankar will exist.
Even if someone keeps defecating (bathing etc) a million times, the external bath of this body cannot purify the mind. Without purity of mind, one cannot even think about God (Vaahiguru). Even if someone meditates in deep concentration and keeps silence from the mouth, one cannot attain peace of mind until the false disorders are removed from the mind. Even if someone consumes all the food items of the world, he cannot satiate the hunger of the mind in the form of craving by staying hungry (by observing fasts etc.). Even if someone has thousands of clever thoughts, they are never helpful in reaching God because they are full of ego. Now the question arises that how can one become a beacon of light of truth in front of God, how can the wall of falsehood between us and Nirankar be broken? While showing the path to becoming the true form, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that it has been written since the beginning of creation that a worldly being can do all this only by following the orders of God.
All the bodies (in the creation of the world) have been created by the order of (Nirankar), but his order cannot be expressed by uttering words. By the order of God, living beings are created in various species (on this earth), by his order only one gets respect (or high or low position). By the order of God (Vahiguru) only a living being gets a good or bad life, by the order written by him only a living being experiences happiness and sorrow. By the order of God many living beings get blessings, by his order many remain trapped in the cycle of birth and death. Everything remains under the control of that supreme power God, there is no work of the world outside him. O Nanak! If a living being comes to know the order of that Akaal Purush with a happy mind, then no one will remain under the control of the egoistic 'I'. This ego does not allow a living being engrossed in worldly splendor to come close to Him.
Some sing his praises knowing him to be with them. Many have described his fame but there is no end to it. Billions of beings have described his qualities, yet his real form could not be found. Akaal Purush becomes the bestower and keeps on giving material things to the beings (indefatigably), (but) the being gets tired of taking. All beings have been enjoying these things for ages. The paths (of the entire creation) are running only by the will of Nirankar who gives orders. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji while cautioning the beings of the creation says that Nirankar (Vahiguru) is always happy (on the beings of this world) without any worries.
That Akaal Purush (Nirankar) is himself true along with his true name. Those who love him (the one with the true name and truth) call him Anant. (All gods, demons, humans and animals etc.) living beings keep on asking, keep on asking, keep on asking (material things), that Giver (Paramatma) keeps on giving to everyone. Now questions arise that (like we take some gifts to other kings and emperors) what kind of gift should be taken to that perfect Paramatma so that his door is easily visible? What kind of praise should we sing from our tongue so that on hearing it that infinite power (God) gives us love-prasad? Guru Maharaj gives clear answer to this that in the morning (Amrit Vela) (at which time a person's mind is generally detached from worldly entanglements) remember the name of that Akaal Purush with the true name and sing his glories, only then can we get his love. (If he is blessed by this) Guruji tells us that by mere deeds, a living being gets this body-like cloth, i.e., human birth, but does not get liberation from this. To attain salvation, His gracious sight is required. O Nanak! Understand this way that the true form Nirankar is the whole and all the doubts of man will be dispelled by this.
That God cannot be established in a tangible form by anyone, nor can He be created. He is beyond illusion and is self-illuminating. The human who has remembered the name of that God has received respect in His court. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that one should worship Nirankar, the storehouse of virtues. While singing His praises and listening to His praises, one should have reverence for Him in his heart. By doing this, sorrows are destroyed, and happiness resides in the house. The words that come out of the Guru's mouth are the knowledge of the Vedas, the same knowledge in the form of teachings is present everywhere. Guru is Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and Mother Parvati, because Guru is the supreme power. Even if I know about that God with attributes, I cannot describe Him, because He cannot be described. O true Guru! Just explain to me that I should never forget the one who is the only giver of all living beings.
One can bathe in holy places only if he accepts it. What will I do by bathing in holy places without the wish of that Akaal Purush, because then all this will be meaningless. Whatever creation I see created by that Creator, in it, without deeds, no creature attains anything, nor does it get anything. If just one knowledge of the true Guru is accepted, then the intellect of the human being becomes full of gems, jewels and rubies. O Guru Ji! Just make me understand that Nirankar, the giver of all the creatures of the creation, should not be forgotten by me.
If a person or a Yogi by practising yoga becomes ten times more than four Yugas, that is, he lives forty Yugas. He becomes famous in the nine regions (Ilavrita, Kimpurush, Bhadra, Bharat, Ketumal, Hari, Hiranya, Ramya and Kush as described in ancient religious texts), everyone walks with him in his honour. He becomes a famous person in the world and keeps on singing his praises. If that person does not come under the grace of Akaal Purush, then no one asks about his well-being. Despite having so much splendour and honour, such a person is considered to be the lowest of all insects in front of God, that is, the lowliest person. Even the faulty people will consider him guilty. Guru Nanak Ji says that the infinite power Nirankar gives virtues to the virtueless people and makes the virtue-rich people more virtuous. But no one else is visible who can give any virtue to that God who is full of virtues.
It is by listening to the name of God, i.e. by devoting one's heart to His glory that Siddha, Peer, Dev and Nath etc. have attained the supreme position. By listening to the name, one gets the knowledge of the earth, the bull that holds it (according to the mythological texts, the white bull holds the earth on its horns) and the power of stability of the sky. By listening to the name, one gets the inner control of the seven islands of Shalmali, Kraunch, Jambu, Palak etc., Bhuh Bhavah, the fourteen worlds like Swah and the seven netherworlds like Atal, Vital, Sutal etc. Death cannot even touch the one who listens to the name. O Nanak! There is always a light of joy in the devotee of God, by listening to the name of God, all sorrows and bad deeds are destroyed.
Only by hearing the name of God, Shiva, Brahma and Indra etc. could attain the highest position. Even the mean people, that is, the people who do bad deeds, become worthy of praise just by hearing the name. By connecting with the name, one understands the secret of Yoga and the six chakras of the body like Vishuddha, Manipurak, Mooladhar etc. By hearing the name, one gets the knowledge of the six scriptures (Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya etc.), twenty-seven Smritis (Manu, Yagyavalkya Smriti etc.) and the four Vedas. O Nanak! The heart of the saints always remains bright with joy. All sorrows and bad deeds are destroyed by hearing the name of God.
By listening to the Name, a man attains the basic religions like truth, contentment and knowledge. By merely listening to the Name, one gets the fruit of bathing in the sixty-eight best of all pilgrimages. After hearing the Name of Nirankar (formless), the person who brings it to the tongue again and again gets respect in his court. By listening to the Name, one gets absorbed in God easily, because by this one purifies the soul and attains knowledge. O Nanak! The devotees of the Lord always have the light of spiritual bliss. All the sorrows and evil deeds are destroyed by listening to the Name of the God.
By listening to the name, one can merge in Shri Hari, the ocean of virtues. Sheikhs, Pirs and kings are adorned on their positions only due to the influence of listening to the name. Ignorant people can attain the path of devotion of God only by listening to the name. Knowing the unfathomable depth of this ocean of existence is also possible by the power of listening to the name. O Nanak! There is always a light of happiness in the heart of good men. All sorrows and evil deeds are destroyed by listening to the name of God.
After hearing the name of that Akaal Purush, the state of the person who believes in him, that is, who keeps him in his heart, cannot be described. Whoever describes his state, has to repent in the end because it is not easy to make it true, there is no such tongue that can reveal the secret of the bliss received from the name. Even if such a state is written, there is no paper for it, no pen and no inquisitive writer, who can think of the one who is absorbed in Waheguru. The name of God is the best and beyond Maya. If someone keeps him in his heart and thinks about him.
Hearing the name of God and thinking about it creates a great love in the mind and intellect. Thinking about it gives us knowledge of the whole universe. A man who thinks about God never has to suffer the worldly pains or the punishment of Yama in the next world. A man who thinks about God does not go to hell with Yama in the end but goes to heaven with the gods. The name of God is very great and beyond illusion. If someone thinks about it by absorbing it in his heart.
There is no obstacle in the path of a human being who meditates on the name of Nirankar. A thoughtful person is respected in the world. Such a person leaves the dilemma or sectarianism and walks on the path of dharma. A thoughtful person has a strong relationship with dharmic activities. The name of God is very great and beyond illusion. If someone meditates on it by absorbing it in his heart.
People who meditate on the Lord's name attain the door of salvation. Those who meditate also give shelter of that name to all their family members. The meditative Gursikh not only crosses this ocean of existence himself but also helps other companions to cross it. O Nanak! The meditative human being does not become a beggar from door to door. The name of God is very great and beyond illusion. If someone meditates on it by absorbing it in his heart.
Those great saints who have meditated on the name of God are accepted at the door of Nirankar, they are the lords there. Such Gurumukhs get respect in the assembly of the beloved Akal Purush. Such good men look beautiful in the royal court. The attention of a Saguni human remains fixed on that one Satguru (Nirankar) only. If a person wants to talk about that creator or give an account of his creation, then the nature of that creator cannot be assessed. The creation created by Nirankar is supported by the Vrishabha (Dhaula bull) in the form of Dharma, which is the son of mercy (because only when there is compassion in the heart, then the dharmic work will be possible with this human being). Which is tied with the thread of satisfaction. If someone knows this secret of God, then he can be truthful. If someone does not believe in this miracle of God, then doubts will arise in his mind that how much burden of this earth is on that bull in human form, how much burden does he have the ability to bear. Because the creation made by the Creator on this earth is beyond the beyond, it is infinite. Then on which power does the burden of that bull depend? In this creation of the Creator, there are people of many sects, colours and known by different names. The account of their deeds has been written on their brains by the pen that works under the command of God. But if any common man talks about writing this account of deeds, then he will not even be able to know how much this account to be written will be. How much power will that God who is writing have, how beautiful is his form. How many teeth does he have, who is there who can estimate it completely. The entire creation has spread with just one word of Akaal Purush. With that one word-like command, the flow of one-to-many living beings and other things has started in the creation. Therefore, I do not have enough intelligence to think about the power of that indescribable God. O eternal form! I am not worthy of sacrificing myself for you even once. Whatever you find good is the best deed. O Nirankar! O Parabrahma! You are always eternal.
In this universe, countless people chant the name of the Creator, countless are those who love Him. Countless worship Him, countless are performing tapasya (meditation). Countless people are reciting dharmic scriptures and Vedas by mouth. Countless keep their minds free from attachments by remaining absorbed in yoga-sadhana. There are countless devotees who attain knowledge by thinking about the qualities of that virtuous Nirankar. There are countless people who know the truth or follow the path of charity and are generous. Countless valiant warriors face the blows of weapons while facing the enemy in the battlefield. Countless human beings remain absorbed in that Akaal-Purush by maintaining silence and being concentrated. Therefore, I do not have enough intelligence to think about the power of that inexpressible God. O Infinite Form! I am not worthy of sacrificing myself for you even once. Whatever seems good to you is the best work. O Nirankar! O Parabrahma! You are always the eternal form.
In this world, countless people are deluded and deeply ignorant. There are countless thieves and people who eat inedibles, who steal others' property and eat it. There are countless people who rule over others with tyranny and then leave this world. Countless unrighteous people who commit the sin of murder by slitting others' throats. Countless sinners leave this world committing sins. Countless people with a false nature keep speaking false words. There are countless people who eat excreta due to their dirty mind. Countless people take the burden of sin on their heads by criticizing others. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, calling himself inferior, says that we have spoken about the creation of evil-doing creatures, that is, of Tamasi and demonic wealth. O Infinite Form! I am not worthy of being sacrificed for you even once. Whatever seems good to you is the best work. O Nirankar! O ParBrahm! You are always the eternal form.
In the creation of that Creator, living beings with innumerable names and innumerable places are roaming around; or in this creation, Akal Purush has innumerable names and innumerable places where God resides. There are innumerable unimaginable worlds. But those people who use the word 'innumerable' while calculating His creation, they also have a burden on their head. Only through words can the name of that Nirankar be chanted, only through words can His praise be sung. The qualities of God can also be known through words and His praise can also be said through words. Only through words can His voice be written and spoken. Through words, the deeds written on the brain can be told. But the Nirankar who has written these karma-lekha (deeds) has no karma-lekha (deeds) on His brain; that is, no one can tell about His deeds nor can anyone keep an account of them. The way Akal Purush gives orders according to the deeds of a man, in the same way he experiences his deeds. The entire expansion that the Creator has done in this universe is just name and form. No place is devoid of His name. That is why I do not have enough intelligence to think about the power of that inexpressible God. Oh Infinite Form! I am not worthy of sacrificing myself for you even once. Whatever seems good to you is the best work. Oh Nirankar! Oh Parabrahma! You are always eternal.
If this body, hands, feet or any other part becomes dirty, then its dirt and mud gets cleaned by washing with water. If a cloth becomes impure by urine etc., then it is washed with soap. If a man's intellect becomes dirty by committing evil deeds, then it can be purified only by remembering the name of Vahiguru. Punya (good deeds) and sin are not just for name. Rather, as and when deeds are done while living in this world, the same will be written down by the Chitra-Gupta sent by Dharamraj, that is, the account of every good and bad deed done by a human being on this earth will go with him, according to the result of which he will attain heaven or hell. So, man himself sows the seed of karma and himself receives its result. Guru Nanak says that the living being will keep coming and going in this world on the orders of Akal-Purush to reap the fruits of his deeds, that is, the deeds of the living being will keep him in the cycle of birth and death, Nirankar will order the result of the deeds of the living being according to the deeds of the living being.
If a person achieves respect by pilgrimage, penance, showing mercy to living beings and by selfless charity, then it is very small. But those who have heard the name of God with love in their heart and have constantly thought about it, they have taken a bath in the pilgrimage of their inner self and have removed their impurities. (That is, that person has cleaned the dirt of his inner soul by merging into Nirankar residing in his heart.) O Sargun Swaroop! All the qualities are in you, there is no good quality in me. Without adopting the qualities of virtue, even the devotion of God cannot be done. O Nirankar! May you always be victorious, you are the form of welfare, you are the form of Brahma. You are truth, you are consciousness and always the form of happiness. When God created this universe, what was the time, what was the time, what was the date and what was the day? Then which season, which month was it, when this expansion happened, who knows all this. Even great scholars, sages, munis etc. could not know the exact time of the expansion of the universe, if they had known, they would have definitely mentioned it in the Vedas or dharmic texts. Even the Qazis could not know the time, if they had known, they would have definitely mentioned it in the Quran etc. Even no Yogi has been able to know the day, season and month of creation of this universe. The creator of this world can only know when this universe was expanded. How can I talk about the wonders of that Akaal Purush, how can I praise him, how can I describe him and how can I know his secret? Satguru Ji says that everyone praises that God by becoming more intelligent than others. But God is great, His name is even greater than that, whatever is happening in the universe is happening because of His doing. O Nanak! If someone talks about knowing His qualities, then he does not get respect in the next world. That is, if any creature boasts of knowing the qualitative secret of that indistinguishable Nirankar, then he does not get respect not only in this world but also in the next world.
Satguru Ji, while clearing the doubts of the common man about the existence of seven heavens and seven netherworlds, says that in the creation of the universe, there are lakhs of netherworlds and lakhs of heavens. The same thing has been said in the Vedas that the seekers have got tired of searching for it till the end, but no one has found its end. It has been said in all the dharmic scriptures that there are eighteen thousand worlds but in reality, their origin is only one God who is their creator. If an account of His creation could be made, then someone should write it, but the one who makes this account gets destroyed himself. O Nanak! The creator who is being called great in this entire universe knows himself or can know himself.
Even the devotees who praise God could not find His limit by praising Him. Just as rivers and streams cannot find the bottomless end of the ocean by merging into it, rather they lose their existence, similarly the people who praise Him get absorbed in it while praising Him. Even being the king of the oceans, the emperor, the owner of wealth like a mountain, they cannot become like that ant, if they had not forgotten God from their mind.
There is no limit to the praise of that Nirankar and even by saying it, his praise cannot end. There is no end to the creation made by the Creator, but even when he gives, there is no end to it. There is no end to his seeing and hearing, that is, that Nirankar is the omniscient and the omniscient. What is the secret of God's heart, it cannot be understood. The duration or limit of the expansion of this creation that he has done cannot be known. Its beginning and end cannot be known. Many living beings are crying to find his end. But that unfathomable, infinite, Akaal Purush cannot be found. No one can know where his qualities end. The more that praise, eulogy, form or qualities of that Parabrahma are praised, the more they increase. Nirankar is the best, his place is the highest. But the name of that best Nirankar is the greatest. If there is any power bigger or higher than him, then only that can know that supreme master. Nirankar knows or can know everything about himself, no one else. Satguru Nanak Dev ji says that the ocean of grace bestows all things on the living beings according to their deeds.
His favours are so many that no one is capable of writing them down. He is great because he bestows many blessings, but he does not have even the slightest greed. Many countless valiant men desire his blessings. Their number cannot be talked about. Many human beings die fighting to enjoy the things given by Nirankar for their vices. Many refuse to take the things given by Akaal Purush. Many foolish people keep taking things from God and eating them, never remembering Him. Many people are always suffering from sorrow and hunger, because it is written in their deeds. But such gentlemen consider such beatings as blessings from God. It is because of these sufferings that the human soul remembers Wahiguru. Man gets freedom from the bondage of illusion and attachment only by obeying God. No one can say that there is any other method for this; that is, no one can tell any other method to get rid of the bondage of illusion except by obeying God. If a person tries to say anything about this due to ignorance, then he will realize how many blows he has to bear on his face from the Yamas etc. God knows the needs of all the creatures of the world and also provides for them himself. Not all the creatures in the world are ungrateful, there are many people who believe that God, being pleased, gives the power to sing his praises to the person. O Nanak! He becomes the king of kings; that is - he attains a high and excellent position.
The qualities of Nirankar which cannot be described are priceless, and the remembrance of this Nirankar is a priceless business. The saints who guide this business of remembrance are also priceless businessmen and the storehouse of virtues that these saints have is also priceless. The people who come to these saints for God-union are also priceless and the virtues that they take from them are also priceless. The love between the Guru and the Sikh is priceless, the bliss that the soul gets from the love of the Guru is also priceless. The justice of Akal Purush is also priceless, his court is also priceless. The scales that give justice to Akal Purush are priceless, and the measure (weight) to weigh the good and bad deeds of the living beings is also priceless. The things provided by Akal Purush are also priceless, and the sign of those things is also priceless. The grace of Nirankar on the living beings is also priceless and his order is also priceless. That God is very priceless, it is impossible to describe Him closely. But still many devotees are merging with Him in the past, present and future by describing His qualities i.e. by praising Him. His glory has been described in the four Vedas and eighteen Puranas. Those who read them also describe Akaal-Purush. The Creator Brahma and the Lord of Heaven Indra also describe His invaluable qualities. Giridhar Gopal Krishna and His Gopis also praise that, Nirankar. Siddhas like Mahadev and Gorakh also talk about His glory. All the wise people that the Creator has created in this world also talk about His glory. All the demons and gods also talk about His glory. All the virtuous humans of the world, sages like Narada and other devotees sing songs of His praise. Many beings are saying this in the present and many will try to say it in the future. Many beings have ended their lives saying this in the past. We have already counted so many, if we add more to this list, then also no one can praise Him invaluably by any means. The more one wants to expand himself, the more he expands. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that only the true form Nirankar knows his invaluable qualities. If any meaningless speaker says that God is this much, then he is marked among the great fools.
How is the door and house of that savior God, where he is looking after the whole universe? (Here Satguru Ji answers this question in retirement) O human! At his door, innumerable musical instruments of various types are resonating and so many players are present. There are so many ragas which are being sung there along with raginis and so many ragis like Gandharva etc. who sing those ragas. The wind, water and fire gods are singing the glory of that Nirankar and Dharmaraj, the analyst of the deeds of all living beings, also stands at his door and sings his glory. Chitragupt, who writes the deeds done by living beings, also sings the praises of that Akaal-Purush and Dharmaraj considers the good and bad deeds written by Chitragupt. Shiva, Brahma and their goddesses (Shakti) who are beautiful, created by God, always sing his praises. O Nirankar! Indra, the ruler of all gods and heaven, sitting on his throne, along with other gods, is standing at your door and singing your praises. Siddhas sing your praises while being in meditation, the thoughtful sages sing your praises with discretion. Ascetics, Satis and contented people also sing your praises, and mighty warriors also sing your glory. All the learned and great self-controlled sages of the world have been singing the praises of that Akaal Purush by reading the Vedas for ages. All the beautiful women who captivate the mind are singing your praises in heaven, earth and underworld. The fourteen gems created by Nirankar, the sixty-eight pilgrimages of the world and the saints (best people) present in them also sing his praises. All the warriors, the mighty, the valiant sing the praises of Akaal Purush, the four sources of origin (egg-born, womb-born, sweat-born and plant-born) also sing his virtues. The nine regions, the mandalas and the entire universe, which the Creator has created and sustained, all sing Your praise. In reality, only those can sing Your praise who are absorbed in Your devotion, who are fond of Your name, and who are liked by You. I am unable to recall many more such beings who sing Your praises, O Nanak! How far should I think of them, that is, how far should I count the living beings who sing Your praises. That true formless Akaal Purush was there in the past, the same Nirankar with attributes is there in the present as well. He will always remain in the future, that Creator God neither takes birth nor perishes. The Creator of the universe, God, has created colourful, diverse and numerous living beings through His Maya. After creating them, He looks after them according to His own liking, that is, He takes care of them according to His own wish. Whatever seems good to that Akaal Purush, he does that and will do it in future, there is no one like him who can command him in this regard. Guru Nanak Ji's order is that O human! That God is the king of kings, i.e. Shahanshah, it is appropriate to live under his orders.
Guruji says, O human yogi! You should adopt the posture of satisfaction, the vessel of shame from bad deeds, the blouse of prestige to be made in this world and the other world by being sinless and apply the vibhuti of God's name-remembrance on your body. Remembering death is your blanket, keeping the body pure is the method of yoga, firm faith in the Akaal Purush is your stick. Adopting all these virtues is the true yogi's attire. You should love all the creatures of the world, that is, you should experience their sorrows and happiness as your sorrows and happiness, this is your Aai Panth (the best path of yogis). Conquering the mind from vices like lust etc. is like conquering the world. Salutations, salutations only to that Nirankar who is the form of all qualities. Who is the origin of all, colorless, pure, beginningless, immortal and unchangeable.
O human! Being the storehouse of the knowledge of the omnipresence of Nirankar is your food, the kindness of your heart will be the storehouse, because only by having compassion can one attain the Sagunas. The conscious being that is manifesting in every heart is like the sound playing. The one who has tied the entire universe in one thread is the creator Parmatma Nath, all the Riddhis and Siddhis are the taste of another kind. The laws of union and separation are together running the work of this universe, the living beings attain their respective destiny according to their karma. Salutations! salutations only to that Sagun form Nirankar. Who is the origin of all & colourless, pure, beginningless, immortal and unchangeable form.
By some mysterious trick of Brahma, three sons were born from the childbirth of Maya. One of them Brahma sat as the creator of the universe, one Vishnu as the nourisher of the world and one Shiva as the destroyer. In the way it pleases the Akaal Purush, he controls these three and these gods do as he orders. That Akaal Purush is watching these three in the beginning and the end, but he cannot see that invisible form Nirankar, this is an astonishing thing. Salutations, only salutations to that Nirankar who has all the attributes, who is the origin of all, colourless, pure form, beginningless, immortal and unchangeable form.
His seat is in every world and every world has his storehouse. That God has filled all the stores once. The Creator is watching the creation after creating. O Nanak! The complete creation of that true form Nirankar is also true. Salutations! salutations only to that formless form Nirankar. Who is the origin of all & colourless, pure form, beginningless, immortal and unchangeable form.
One tongue should become lakhs of tongues, then from lakhs it should become twenty lakhs. Then with each tongue one name of that Jagadishwar should be uttered lakhs of times, that is, the name of that God should be remembered day and night. Through this path, only by climbing the stairs of name made to meet the Husband-God, one can meet that unique God. Although after listening to the great words of Brahm-Gyani, even the inferior beings wish to imitate them due to body consciousness. But Guru Nanak Ji says that that God can be attained only by His grace, rather these are the false words of false people.
Without the grace of Akal Purush, this creature does not have the power to say anything or to remain silent, that is, it is not in the power of the creature to use its tongue. It does not have the power to ask for anything nor is it capable of giving anything. If the creature wants to remain alive, it does not have the power, because many times a person dies while undergoing treatment, even dying is not in his control. This creature has no power to acquire wealth, property and prosperity, for which there is a passion in the mind. It does not have the power to think about the knowledge of Shruti Vedas. It does not have the power to adopt the tips given in the six scriptures to get free from the world. The Akal Purush who has the power in his hands is the one who is creating and seeing. Guru Nanak Ji says that then one should know that in this world no one is low or high by his own will, the person remains as the God keeps him according to his deeds.
Nights, seasons, dates, days of the week, air, water, fire and underworld etc. are all illusions. The Creator God has established a Dharamshala in the form of Earth in it, this is called Karmabhoomi. There are various types of living beings in that Dharamshala, who have many different ways of worshipping religion and karma, and they have many types of colors like white and black. They have many types of infinite names. Those numerous living beings roaming in the world are considered according to their good and bad deeds. That Nirankar who considers is himself true and his court is also true. Only those who are authentic saints, on whose foreheads the mark of the grace of the merciful God is marked, adorn his court. In the court of God, one is tested for being immature and mature. O Nanak! This fact is decided only after going there.
(In rituals) this is the rule of Dharmkhand; which has been stated in the previous lines. (Guru Nanak Ji) Now describes the practice of Gyan Khand. (In this world) how many types of wind, water, fire are there, and how many forms of Krishna and Rudra (Shiva). How many Brahmas create living beings in this universe in the guise of many forms and colors. How many Karma Bhumis, Sumer Parvat, Dhruv devotees and their teachers are there. How many Indras and Moons are there, how many Suns, how many Mandals and countries within Mandals are there. How many Siddhas, scholars and Naths are there, how many forms of goddesses are there. How many gods, demons and sages are there and how many seas are full of gems. How many sources of birth are there (oviparous-ovine), how many types of speech are there (Para, Pashyanti etc.) how many kings are there and how many emperors are there. There are so many Veda-Shrutis and so many followers of them. Guru Nanak Ji says that there is no end to His creations; the end of all these is known only when one goes to the Gyan Khand, where the soul becomes the vehicle of knowledge.
The knowledge that is told in the Gyan Khand is strong. In this Khand, there is love, happiness and playful bliss. (In the Shram Khand, God's devotion is considered to be the best) The speech of the saints who undertake the endeavour of God's devotion is sweet. There (in the Shram Khand) a form of unparalleled beauty is created. Their words cannot be described. If someone even tries to describe their greatness, then he has to repent later. There, the Vedas, Shruti, knowledge, mind and intellect are created. There, the insight of the gods with divine intellect and attainment of the state of perfection is created.
The speech of those worshippers who have received the grace of God becomes powerful. Where these worshippers are present, there is no one else. Among those worshippers, there are warriors who conquer the body, Mahabali who conquer the senses and valiant warriors who conquer the mind. Lord Rama is present in them. Along with that Nirgun form of Rama, Sita in the form of glory shines like the moon and soothes the mind. The qualities of those who have attained such a form cannot be described. Those worshippers neither die nor are cheated, in whose hearts the form of God Rama is present. Devotees from many worlds reside there. Those in whose hearts the form of Nirankar resides in the form of truth, they attain bliss. That Nirankar resides in the hearts (Sachkhand) of those who hold the truth; that is, in Vaikunth Lok, where the sympathetic people reside, that Sargun form of God resides. This creator God creates his creation and then looks at it with kind eyes, that is, nourishes it. In that true world there are infinite parts, circles and universes. If someone tries to describe its end, he cannot find the end, because it is infinite. There are many worlds present there and the existence of those living in them is also many. Then they work in the way the Almighty God commands. He becomes happy by seeing this world created by him and thinking about the good and bad deeds. Guru Nanak Ji says that it is very difficult to describe the essence of that Nirankar which I have mentioned.
Let there be a furnace in the form of sense-control, a goldsmith in the form of self-restraint, a hammer in the form of unwavering intellect, a hammer in the form of Guru's knowledge. Make the fear of Nirankar the bellows and the life of penance the heat of fire. Make the heart-love the vessel and melt the Amrit of the name in it. In this true mint, a moral life is forged. That is, only in such a mint can a virtuous life be created. Only those who have the blessings of the Akaal Purush get to do these tasks. O Nanak! Such virtuous beings are blessed due to the blessings of that ocean of mercy, God.
