Prashna • Chapter 4 • Shloka 3
प्राणाग्रय एवैतस्मिन् पुरे जाग्रति।
गार्हपत्यो ह वा एषोऽपानो व्यानोऽन्वाहार्यपचनो यद् गार्हपत्यात् प्रणीयते प्रणयनादाहवनीयः प्राणः ॥
But in this city of the body, the fires of Prāṇa alone remain awake.
Apāna is indeed the Gārhapatya fire (the household sacrificial fire).
Vyāna is the Anvāhāryapacana fire (the southern sacrificial fire).
And Prāṇa is the Āhavanīya fire, for just as the sacred fire is carried forth from the Gārhapatya fire, so does Prāṇa proceed from Apāna.
