Prashna • Chapter 1 • Shloka 9
संवत्सरो वै प्रजापतिः स्तस्यायने दक्षिणञ्चोत्तरं च।
तद्ये ह वै तदिष्टापूर्ते कृतमित्युपासते ते चान्द्रमसमेव लोकमभिजयन्ते त एव पुनरावर्तन्ते।
तस्मादेत ऋषयः प्रजाकामा दक्षिणं प्रतिपद्यन्ते। एष ह वै रयिर्यः पितृयाणः ॥
The year (Saṁvatsara) indeed is Prajāpati, and it has two paths: the southern course (Dakṣiṇāyana) and the northern course (Uttarāyaṇa).
Those who regard sacrificial works and charitable deeds (Iṣṭa and Pūrta) as the highest attainment reach only the lunar world (the realm of the Moon).
Having enjoyed the fruits of their actions there, they return again to earthly existence.
Therefore, those sages who seek progeny and worldly results follow the southern path.
This indeed is Rayi, the path known as the Way of the Ancestors (Pitṛyāna).
