अथातः सांयमनं प्रातर्दनमान्तरमग्निहोत्रमिति चाचक्षते यावद्वै पुरुषो भाषते न तावत्प्राणितुं शक्नोति प्राणं तदा वाचि जुहोति । यावद्वै पुरुषः प्राणिति न तावद्भाषितुं शक्रोति वाचं तदा प्राणे जुहोति । एते अनन्ते अमृताहुती जाग्रच्च स्वपंश्च संततमव्यवच्छिन्नं जुहोत्यथ या अन्या-आहुतयोऽन्तवत्यस्ताः कर्ममय्यो हि भवन्त्येतद्ध वै पूर्वे विद्वांसोऽग्निहोत्रं न जुहवांचकुः ॥
Now, concerning what is called the inner Agnihotra, the evening offering and the morning offering. As long as a person is speaking, he is not able at that moment to breathe fully. Then he offers the prāṇa into speech. As long as a person is breathing, he is not able at that moment to speak. Then he offers speech into prāṇa. These are the two endless, immortal oblations. Whether awake or asleep, he continuously and uninterruptedly offers them. All other oblations are finite; they belong to the realm of action (karma). Therefore, the ancient knowers of Brahman did not regard the external Agnihotra as the highest sacrifice.
