Jabal Darshan • Chapter 2 • Shloka 15
उच्चैर्जपादुपांशुश्च सहस्त्रगुणमुच्यते । मानसश्च तथोपांशोंः सहस्त्रगुणमुच्यते उच्चैर्जपश्च सर्वेषां यथोक्तफलदो भवेत्। नीचैः श्रोत्रेण चेन्मन्त्रः श्रुतश्चेत्रिष्फलं भवेत् ॥
Upāṃśu Japa (softly muttered repetition) is said to be a thousand times superior to loud recitation (Ucchaiḥ Japa).
Likewise, mental Japa (Mānasa Japa) is said to be a thousand times superior to Upāṃśu Japa.
Loud recitation yields the fruits that have been prescribed for it.
If the mantra is recited softly enough to be heard only by one's own ears, it is said to produce a threefold result.
