गुशब्दस्त्वन्धकारः स्यात् रुशब्दस्तन्निरोधकः ।
अन्धकारनिरोधित्वाद्गुरुरित्यभिधीयते ॥
In the word Guru, 'Gu' means darkness and the word 'ru' means the one who stops it (darkness). Because of stopping the darkness (of ignorance), (the person who stops darkness) is called Guru.
