Aitareya • Chapter 3 • Shloka 14
तस्मादिदन्द्रो नामेदन्द्रो ह वै नाम।
तमिदन्द्रं सन्तमिंद्र इत्याचक्षते परोक्षेण।
परोक्षप्रिया इव हि देवाः परोक्षप्रिया इव हि देवाः ॥
Therefore, His name became Idandra—for He said, “I have seen This (idam adarśam).”
Indeed, Idandra was His name.
But though He is truly called Idandra, people refer to Him as Indra indirectly.
For the gods delight in the indirect and symbolic manner of expression.
Indeed, the gods are fond of the indirect; the gods are fond of the indirect.
