Shakuntala(Looking ahead) “This Kesara (Maulshri) tree, shaken by the wind, seems as though with its leaf-like fingers it is urging me to come quickly (that is, calling me swiftly toward itself). Therefore, I shall first honor it (by watering it).” (She turns) Priyamvada— “Friend Shakuntala, remain here for a moment (a little while).” Shakuntala— “For what reason?” Priyamvada— “Because by your nearness (that is, by your standing beside it), this Maulshri (Kesara) tree appears as though united with a creeper (in the form of a beautiful woman).” Shakuntala— “That is why you are called Priyamvada (the one who speaks pleasing words).” King— “Though affectionate toward Shakuntala, Priyamvada has indeed spoken the truth. Surely this (Shakuntala’s) lower lip is red like a tender sprout (new leaf); her arms resemble delicate branches (boughs); and throughout her limbs there pervades a charming (captivating) youthfulness like the beauty of a flower.”
