Chapter 13 — Yathasukham

Ashtavakra Gita
7 Shloka • Translation Only
King Janaka said: The natural ease of one who possesses nothing is difficult to attain, even for a mendicant clothed only in a loincloth. Therefore, abandoning both renunciation and acquisition, I abide as I am, in effortless happiness.
At times the body experiences fatigue. At times the tongue is troubled. At times the mind is disturbed. Leaving all these aside, I remain established in the highest purpose of life and abide in happiness.
Reflecting deeply upon the truth that, in reality, nothing is ever accomplished by the Self, whatever action comes to be done at any given time, I do it. Having done it, I abide in happiness and ease.
The notions of action and inaction belong only to the yogi who identifies with the body. Being free from both union and separation, I abide in happiness and ease.
For me, there is neither gain nor loss in standing, nor in walking, nor in lying down. Therefore, whether standing, moving, or sleeping, I abide in happiness and ease.
I incur no loss by sleeping, nor do I gain any special attainment through effort. Therefore, abandoning both disappointment and elation, I abide in happiness and ease.
Having repeatedly observed that states such as pleasure and the rest arise according to their own nature, I have abandoned concern for what is considered auspicious and inauspicious. Therefore, I abide in happiness and ease.
