Aitareya

4 Shloka • Translation Only

Om. "Which is this Self that we worship? Which indeed is that Self? That by which one sees, that by which one hears, that by which one smells fragrances, that by which one articulates speech, and that by which one distinguishes between what is pleasant and unpleasant in taste."

That which is the heart and the mind—this indeed is: awareness, understanding, knowledge, wisdom, intelligence, perception, steadfastness, thought, discernment, impulse, memory, intention, resolve, vital consciousness, desire, and will. All these are but names of Prajñā (Consciousness).

This is Brahman. This is Indra. This is Prajāpati. These are all the gods. And these are the five great elements—earth, air, space, water, and light. And all these various beings, whether small or great; those born from eggs, those born from the womb, those born from moisture, and those that sprout from the earth; horses, cows, human beings, elephants; whatever living creature exists—moving or flying, and whatever is stationary— all of it is guided by Consciousness, established in Consciousness, and governed by Consciousness. The world is led by Prajñā (Consciousness). Consciousness is its foundation. Prajñānam Brahma — Consciousness is Brahman.

Through this conscious Self (Prajñā Ātman), he departed from this world. Having attained all worthy fulfillments in that heavenly state, he became immortal. He became immortal indeed.
