Zaafarnama is a letter written by the tenth and last Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh, which he wrote to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1706 after leaving Anandpur. Aurangzeb was extremely impressed after reading this letter. At this time, Emperor Aurangzeb was living the last days of his life. This letter was originally written in Persian language. In 'Zaafarnama', Guru Govind Singh raised his voice against the atrocities of Aurangzeb. This letter is also called 'Vijay Patra'. Undoubtedly, this letter of Guru Govind Singh is a wonderful confluence of spirituality, diplomacy and bravery. 'Zaafarnama' literally means - "Letter of Victory". The letter discusses Aurangzeb's false oaths and his misrule. 'Zaafarnama' also discusses the atrocities of the Mughals, their political views, the ways of the mullahs and maulvis, etc. Another collection of letters written by Guru Govind Singh to Aurangzeb in Persian is named 'Hikayatnamah'. Guru Govind Singh himself has written in 'Zaafarnaama' that - "When all means fail, then it is justified to take up the sword." After sacrificing the lives of his parents, sons and thousands of Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh writes in his letter 'Zaafarnaama' written in Persian language to Aurangzeb - "Aurangzeb, you should recognize the Lord and should not make the people unhappy. You had sworn on the Quran that I will maintain peace and will not fight, this oath is a burden on your head. You fulfill it now." The voice of the writer of 'Zaafarnaama' is the voice of a conqueror, in which there is no glimpse of any kind of sadness and frustration. Guru Gobind Singh, in a very powerful language, while showing all the good qualities of Aurangzeb, boldly writes that - "You are miles away from Dharma."
