About this Scripture
Vairagyashatakam is one of the three famous satakas (shataktraya) of Bhartrihari. There are hundred verses related to Vairagya (disinterest) in it. The other two in the Shatkatraya are Shringarashatkam and Nitishatkam. Content trishnadushanam digression-irony Yagya-Dainyadushanam Bhogasthairyavarnanam Kalamahima yeti-nrupati-sambhashanam Manahsabdohan-Niyamanam eternal thoughts shivarchanam avadhootcharya Like the ripples and bubbles of water, where can living beings find happiness in this fickle and mortal life. In old age, with dilapidated and wrinkled organs, a man has to leave everything and go to the pit of time - enjoyment does not end, but the person himself ends. What a serious thing the poet has said- भोगा न भुक्ता वायमेव भुक्ताः कालो न यातो वायमेव यताः तृष्णा न जिर्णा वायमेव जिर्णाः ..7.. (Meaning - We did not enjoy the pleasures, rather the pleasures only suffered us. We did not do penance, but we ourselves meditated. Kaal (time) did not go anywhere, but we ourselves went away. Even after all this, my desire to get something did not go away (did not become old), but we ourselves became dilapidated.) In this way, Bhrithari has rendered the importance of worldliness and disinterestedness here. In this century, there has been a wonderful coordination of poetic talent and philosophy. It shows the emerging feelings of indifference towards worldly attractions and pleasures. It is the wish of the poet that his time should be spent chanting Shiva-Shiva in some holy forest.
