About this Scripture
Shringar Shatakam is one of the three famous Shatakas (shatakatrayas) of Bhartrihari. There are hundred verses related to adornment in it. Theme In this composition, the poet has depicted the beauty of the ladies and their graceful gestures that attract men. In this Shatak, the poet has discussed in detail about women's gestures, types, their attractiveness and their physical fitness. The poet says that it is not fair to consider the ladies, who distract even the gods like Indra with their sarcasm, as weak. A woman binds the human mind by attracting it with her attractive gestures - "समस्तभावैः खलु बन्धनं स्त्रियः" - In addition to this, Bhartrihari in his Shatak has given a highly erotic description of women in Vasant, Summer, Rain, Sharad, Hemant and Shishir Ritu (seasons). In fact, in this Shatak, the attitude of indecisiveness has been depicted between the two options of worldly enjoyment and renunciation, which becomes determined after reaching his another work known as "Vairagya Shatakam". While saluting Kamadeva in the invocation of Shatak, Bhartrihari says - Salutations to that God Pushpayudh (Kamadeva - Lord of Lust), who has made Vishnu and Shiva to be constant slaves to do the housework of the Kaminis (voluptuous) with eyes like deer, which seems strange to such characters, which speech is unable to describe. Bhartrihari explains how woman is the reason for man's worldly bondage - With a soft smile, with a disordered feeling of conscience, with shame, with sudden fear, with a squint, with conversation, with discord due to envy, with pleasures - in this way women are the reason for men's worldly bondage. After this, many weapons (weapons) of women have been counted - The cleverness of the ups and downs of the eyebrows, sarcasm through semi-enchanted eyes, highly aliphatic and sweet speech, shyly soft humor, slow movement and being stable through luxury - these expressions are women's ornaments as well as weapons. And see who is considered the best in Bhartrihari's Shringar Shatakam - What is the best thing in this world to be seen by the devotees at the time of youth? Mrignayani's face happy with love. What is the best of the things to smell? The scented wind of her mouth. What is the best of things to hear? Sweet words of women. What is the best of delicious things? The sweet juice of her lips like the Pallav of women. What is the best of the things that can be touched? Her safflower soft body. What is the best thing to meditate on? Forever the youthful luxury of her How attractive is the comparison of women from different planets- Because of the weight of the breast, Devguru is like Jupiter, because of being radiant, like the Sun, because of being moon-faced, like the moon, and because of being adorned with slow-moving or Saturn-like feet, the beauties are only planetary forms.
