About this Scripture
Purusha Suktam is an important Vedic Prayer. Purusha is the shortened form of Vishnu’s name Purushottama (The Superior of all Males). Lord Vishnu is an important deity; he is one of the great trinities reclining in Yoga Nidra at his abode Vaikunta. Purusha Suktam praises the qualities and characteristics of Vishnu and requests him to shower his benign grace upon the devotees. Purusha Suktam is one of the important stotras found in the Vedas. Great sages like Adi Sankara and several scholars have written commentaries to it. Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas, contains the original Purusha suktha mantra. It is also found in the Vajaneya Samhitha of Shukla Yajur Veda, Taiteeriya Samhitha of Krishna Yajurveda and in the Sama Veda and Atharva Veda with slight differences. In Purusha Suktham, the Purusha is described to be omnipresent and omnipotent.
