Japji Sahib

Japuji, the original speech of Guru Granth Sahib, is the nectar-like speech uttered by Guru Nanak for the welfare of the people. About this Scripture
Japuji Sahib is a Sikh prayer which is at the beginning of Guru Granth Sahib. It was composed by Guru Nanak Dev. Japuji begins with 'Moolmantra', after that it has 38 more verses, and at the end there is 'Shlok' (Shlok). The 38 verses are in different meters. Origin Guru Nanak's Janam Sakhis mention that when Guruji lived in Sultanpur, he used to go to the nearby Vai river to take a bath every day. When he was 27 years old, one morning he went to take a bath in the river and remained in meditation for three days. The account says that at this time Guruji had a vision of God. He was blessed by God and as a symbol of divine mercy God gave Guruji a cup of Amrit. Accounts bear witness to the fact that inspired by this divine experience Guruji uttered the Mool Mantra, with which Japuji Sahib begins. Structure The opening word of Japuji is an Omkari Beej Mantra or 'Mool Mantra' in which the qualities of the Lord have been stated. Ek Omkar Satnaam, Karta Purkhu Nirbhau, Nirbair, Akal Moorti, Ajooni, Saibham Gur Prasadi The entire Japuji is broadly divided into four parts- 1. First seven verses, 2. Next twenty verses, 3. Next four verses, 4. Remaining seven verses. The first seven verses explain the problem of the soul seeking spirituality. The second part leads the readers progressively towards the path of sadhana till the soul realizes the great truth. The third part describes the mental inclinations and vision of a person who has tasted spirituality. The last part presents the essence of the entire sadhana, which is highly valuable in itself, because in this part the stages of spiritual development of the contemplative soul oriented towards the true and eternal truth, the path of sadhana, have been directly described.
