About this Scripture
The Isha Upanishad, also known as Shri Ishopanishad, is one of the shortest Upanishads, embedded as the final chapter (adhyāya) of the Shukla Yajurveda. It is a Mukhya (primary, principal) Upanishad, and is known in two recensions, called Kanva and Madhyandina. The Upanishad is a brief poem, consisting of 17 or 18 verses, depending on the recension. The root of the word Īśvara comes from īś- (Ish) which means "capable of" and "owner, ruler, chief of", ultimately cognate with English own. The word Īśa literally means "ruler, master, lord". The term vāsyam literally means "hidden in, covered with, enveloped by". Isha Upanishad got its name from the opening words of the first verse from the book. The subject matter of Isha Upanishad is profound, spiritual and comprehensive. It helps in the formation of the foundation. As of all the Upanishads, Isha Upanishad and its subjects also include spiritual, profound, and forms of Vedic Scriptures and thoughts. Isha Upanishads tries to convey the knowledge of spiritual solidarity in the unity of all existences.
