About this Scripture
The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is an Upanishad associated with the Shukla Yajurveda. It is an exponent of Advaita Vedanta and asceticism. It is the largest of the Upanishads and is considered to be the last Upanishad in the category of ten main Upanishads. Brahma is the originator of its sampradaya tradition. It is very ancient and many things have been said about Jiva (Individual Soul), Universe and Brahma (God) in it. Adi Shankaracharya also wrote a commentary on this philosophically important Upanishad. It is a section of the Shatapatha Brahmana text and is included in the text of the Shatapatha Brahmana. In addition to the famous Purusha Sukta of Yajurveda, it has subjects like Ashwamedha, Asato Ma Sadgamaya, Neti Neti. It has a dialogue between sage Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi which is very orderly and well thought out. Its name (Brihadaranyaka = Brihad + Aranyaka) means 'the one with great knowledge' or 'the Upanishad written in the dense forests'. There is a very beautiful description of philosophy and useful deeds and worships in it. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is the exponent of Advaita Vedanta and asceticism.
