About this Scripture
The Ashtavakra Gita is a profound dialogue between the sage Ashtavakra and King Janaka on the nature of the Self (Ātman), reality, bondage, and liberation. It presents one of the most direct and uncompromising expressions of Advaita (Non-dualism) found in spiritual literature. Unlike many other sacred texts, the Ashtavakra Gita focuses almost exclusively on the highest truth of the Self. It declares the essential unreality of the phenomenal world and affirms the absolute oneness of existence. The text contains little discussion of ritual, morality, religious duties, or social obligations. Instead, it points directly to the ever-free nature of pure Consciousness. Throughout the dialogue, Ashtavakra repeatedly teaches that bondage arises only through identification with the body, mind, and world, while liberation is nothing more than the recognition of one's true nature as the infinite, unattached Self. Names, forms, distinctions, and conceptual divisions are presented as appearances arising through ignorance, having no ultimate reality of their own. A well-known episode describes an encounter between King Janaka and Ashtavakra concerning the sage's physically deformed body. Ashtavakra explains that just as the shape of a temple does not affect the space within it, the form of the body does not affect the Self. The ignorant perceive only external appearances, while the wise recognize the one Consciousness present in all. Among the many celebrated teachings of the text are: • "You are truly unbound, actionless, self-luminous, and pure. The cause of bondage is merely the attempt to control the mind." (1.15) • "You are unconditioned, changeless, formless, unmoving, unfathomable Awareness—ever free and untouched." (1.17) • "You are not bound by anything. Being pure, what is there for you to renounce? Let the body and mind come to rest, and abide in your natural state." (5.1) The Ashtavakra Gita remains one of the most radical declarations of spiritual freedom ever recorded, inviting the seeker to recognize that the Self is already complete, ever-liberated, and beyond all becoming.
