About this Scripture
Amritananda Upanishad is one of the minor Upanishads. It has 38 verses and is part of the Krishna Yajurveda. It explains the attainment of Brahman through the practice of yoga. Its logic is that there are three paths before a seeker - attentive listening, contemplation and meditation (Shravana, Manana and Nididhyasana). The threefold path leads him to the attainment of the Supreme Self (Brahman). Yoga helps a person to concentrate and meditate intensely on Brahman. Thus the Upanishad has been described as Yoga Upanishad. Amritananda Upanishad explains the effects of pranayama, one of the eight limbs of yoga, in a typical Upanishad simile – just as the impurities of mineral ore are burnt by a blower, so too are the consequences of misdeeds committed by the senses.
